During consultations for rhinoplasty in Michigan, I often meet women and men who are concerned that surgery to make their nose smaller will impair their breathing. Although this is a legitimate concern, it shouldn't keep a person from meeting with a qualified surgeon to discuss options for maintaining, and even improving, breathing.

Even though nasal hump reduction and other cosmetic rhinoplasties may make the exterior of the nose appear smaller, the functionality of the nose can actually be improved during the surgery. Insurance companies will often cover all or part of a rhinoplasty surgery if it is performed to alleviate breathing problems.

Regardless of the conditions being treated during surgery, every procedure should be customized to create natural looking results. When performing nasal hump reduction, it's important to make sure that just the right amount of contouring is done to enhance the overall facial shape without distorting it. This and other concerns should be discussed with a highly skilled plastic surgeon who has the experience and training to achieve excellent, personalized results.
