With the weather getting warmer and summer vacations right around the corner, many of my breast enlargement patients in Indiana are anxious to travel and show off their new physique. One of the most common questions I receive during consultations is whether or not it is safe to travel by airplane after breast augmentation. As a general rule, I typically recommend that my patients give themselves at least 1 to 2 weeks of recovery time before attempting to travel or engage in strenuous activity. This is so that I can monitor their recovery and be certain that there are no post-operative complications to address, not because flying poses an additional risk to women with breast implants (your breast implants will not "explode" or expand).

If you absolutely must travel within the first few days after surgery, take the following precautions:

  • Drink plenty of water and move your legs frequently to reduce the risk of blood clot formation.
  • If possible, travel with a partner and avoid carrying large or heavy baggage.
  • Stay calm and avoid activities that could increase your heart rate, as this may increase a chance of bleeding.
  • Discuss your travel plans with your surgeon and follow his or her instructions.
