Many of the cosmetic surgery trends of 2010 are somewhat obvious– breast augmentation ranks as the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure. What is intriguing, however, is how popular body contouring procedures have become in the past year.

According to recently released statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), both liposuction and tummy tuck procedures ranked in the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures. In general, cosmetic surgery procedures increased from 2009 to 2010 by 5 percent. According to the ASPS, this rise in cosmetic surgery reflects consumer confidence.

As a tummy tuck surgeon in Connecticut, I find it interesting to see two body contouring procedures within the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures in 2010. At my practice, a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can offer patients the following benefits:

  • A narrowed waistline
  • Improved contours of the midsection
  • Tightened abdominal muscles
  • A more toned and flatten abdomen
  • Removal of lax, loose skin

Tummy tuck surgery can have several benefits, particularly to women who have had children and experience difficulty restoring youth to that area of their bodies. That is one reason why I predict procedure will continue to rank as one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures.
