Breast Implants – Who Has, Who Hasn`t, Who Cares?

The internet has been abuzz recently with discussion about several high-profile women, who may or may not have undergone breast augmentation. One former vice-presidential candidate was even asked the question point-blank during an interview on a nationally-televised newscast. This just goes to show how fascinated our culture is by rumors of celebrities and plastic surgery.

It is always interesting to see how these women address the rumors of their breast enhancement. Some deny it vehemently, despite obvious changes in their appearance. Some coyly and artfully dodge the issue, leaving their cosmetic surgery status a mystery. And a refreshing few candidly own up to their surgeries and treatments. Interestingly, there tends to be much less gossip about those who fall into the last category – it's more fun to speculate.

One of the reasons that we never get tired of dishing about "who has" and "who hasn't" probably stems from our own natural insecurities. Of course, we all know that no one is perfect, but celebrities can certainly seem flawless. It is sort of reassuring to know that even the rich, famous, beautiful and powerful have insecurities about their breast size, too.

Ultimately, these very public figures have many of the same concerns as the women I see for breast augmentation in Phoenix. And like those high profile women who find themselves the subject of speculation, my patients must decide for themselves whether to be tight-lipped or open about their surgery. I tell my patients "It's your surgery; the only one that matters is you." Whether you're a celebrity or a soccer mom, breast augmentation is a personal choice and it should be made to please the patient, not the public.
