Questions and Answers for Breast Reduction SurgeryPosted Monday, July 12, 2010 to PROCEDURES > Breast Posted by Kenrick Spence, M.D.; Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Question. How long will it be before I can return to the gym after my breast reduction? Answer. My patients are cleared to perform lower body exercises within 10 to 14 days of their breast reduction surgery, with a well fitted support bra. Depending on how well they are healing they may return to lifting heavy weights in the gym a few weeks after that. Question. My 15 year old daughter would like to have liposuction alone to reduce the size of her very large breasts. Answer. First we need to be sure her breasts have finished growing and it is the right time for a breast reduction operation. Yes, Orlando liposuction by itself can reduce the size of the breasts. The best candidates are usually young patients with very tight skin. It often works to take the breasts down 1 to 2 cup sizes. A well-fitting support bra is very important for these patients after surgery. Question. Will I still have sensation in my nipples after breast reduction surgery? Answer. Many patients presenting for breast reduction surgery with extremely large breasts often do not have much sensation in their nipples to begin with. It is possible to lose some or all nipple sensation after breast reduction surgery. In general, pedicle techniques have a much greater chance of preserving nipple sensation than do free nipple grafts. Question. Will my body image change significantly after breast reduction surgery? Answer. Large breasts can significantly impact a woman's body image. The challenges are activity limitations, effects on intimacy, and the ability to find clothes that are flattering. Many patients report significant improvement in body image after breast reduction surgery at my practice. Question. I have diabetes and I am 30 pounds overweight. Can I have a breast reduction operation? Answer. The combination of diabetes and obesity puts you at greater risk for breast reduction surgery. It does not mean that it cannot be done. What is important is that you lose some weight and have your blood sugars well controlled prior to surgery to minimize your risks of complications. Here is where close communication between your plastic surgeon and your primary care doctor is most important. Kenrick A.
