Breast Augmentation for the Weight Loss Patient

Breast augmentation in the weight loss patient is a popular procedure. The massive weight loss patient can present a unique set of circumstances which a breast augmentation surgeon must be familiar with.

  • The skin of the breasts may have gone through multiple weight fluctuations losing almost all of its elasticity.
  • The breast tissue may be thinned and the ligaments of the fold of the breast may be stretched.
  • A large breast implant alone may simply worsen the condition.
  • Evaluation of skin tightness, skin tone, and the stability of the fold of the breast must also be taken into account.

These patients often need a breast lift in conjunction with breast augmentation. In order to achieve a long-lasting result, a balance between skin tightening and implant volume must be sought. Other considerations for massive weight loss patients include additional skin tightening procedures which may change body proportion and the final result with respect to the appearance of breast augmentation. Will the patient have an absolutely flat abdomen with a future tummy tuck, and how will this affect the projection of the patient's breasts?
