What the Heck is a "Gummy Smile"?Posted Tuesday, August 12, 2008 to PROCEDURES > Smile Posted by mmoore What would you say if I told you that millions of Americans are living with a condition that causes them to avoid smiling? And what if I told you that this problem can be fixed through a simple cosmetic procedure performed at the office of a skilled Beverly Hills dentist? What is this mystery condition? OK, I won't keep you in suspense any longer. The problem is known as a gummy smile - a smile that reveals a large portion of the upper gum. For many people, the unflattering appearance created by a gummy smile causes them to avoid showing their full smile, or even placing a hand over their mouths when they smile or laugh. The solution is a lip lowering procedure. Unlike far more invasive procedures that actually cut and reposition the front segment of the upper jaw, the lip lowering procedure involves very few incisions and patients can be completely healed in just a few days. This avoids the complexity, discomfort, hospitalization, and inherent complications of traditional methods, not to mention a dramatic cost savings over surgery to cut and reposition the jaw, which may cost up to $40,000. If you don't have a "gummy smile," this cosmetic problem may not seem like a big deal at all. But the reality is that no one wants to be self-conscious when they smile and laugh - moments they should be able to enjoy to the fullest. The ideal smile shows just a small amount of the upper gum line. Through a lip lowering procedure, the lips while at rest will remain in their natural shape and position, but when a patient smiles the upper lip movement will be limited. The result: a smile that looks much more flattering and helps patients feel confident about showing their true emotions. I know of a Beverly Hills dentist performing this procedure, and I'm sure there are others who offer a similar technique. I encourage you to ask your dental professional for an opinion about yoru cosmetic options to treat a "gummy smile."
