Many people choose to live in these communities because of the scenery and lifestyle. Though the climate can be cold and rainy at times, many men and women in the area still spend a lot of time outdoors, and they also spend a lot of time exercising and staying in shape – the area is one of the fittest in the nation.
Why am I giving such a long geography lesson on a cosmetic surgery site? Well, I think it helps to give a more nuanced perspective on a popular procedure for many women in Sonoma and Marin County: breast augmentation. Breast enlargement is one of those procedures that many people associate with Southern California, but the “superficial” lifestyle that some may think spawns a desire for cosmetic surgery just doesn’t exist in Northern California. Instead, something else is going on.
In fact, there are plenty of differences between Northern California and Southern California. One big difference is of course the weather. But as anyone who lives in Cali can tell you, the bigger difference is the attitude. Northern Californians have a reputation for progressive thinking and environmentalism. And while some of these values are spreading across California and indeed nationwide, So Cal still has a unique feel to it. Whole books have been written about the Southern California experience, and Hollywood movies continue to paint a picture of one of the more glamorous worlds that combine in the tapestry of cities from Santa Barbara to San Diego.
Some people might think that breast augmentation is a distinctly Southern California thing. But the fact is that this procedure is popular nationwide (almost 400,000 procedures performed in 2007 alone according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) and many women north of San Francisco in Sonoma and Marin County choose breast augmentation. Women across the United States want to look their best and have their body reflect their own sense of sensuality. While of course the procedure makes a lot of sense for many women in warmer climates (where pools and beaches are open year-round), not every woman who chooses breast augmentation is hoping to look fantastic in a bikini.
So why are so many women in Sonoma, Napa, or Marin County breast augmentation believers? I think it has more to do with a universal feeling that looking good and feeling good go hand-in-hand, rather than cultural or geographic differences. For better or for worse, female beauty is prized the world over. It takes on many diverse expressions, but in most cultures, the female breast is a symbol of youth, vitality, and sensuality. More importantly, both women and men want to enjoy a look that helps them feel confident. The fact is that many women with small, asymmetrical, or unattractive breasts don’t feel comfortable in their own bodies. You can say that’s largely influenced by a society that prizes female beauty, and of course you would be right. But you’d also be right if you said that women (and men) who choose plastic surgery are taking control of their bodies and doing what feels right for their personal goals.
