Researching Plastic Surgery? Research Your Plastic Surgeon.

It’s common – and smart – for men and women considering plastic surgery to research the procedure they’re interested in. But, if you’re considering surgery, shouldn’t you also invest some time researching your surgeon?

E! News, Voice of America, the New York Daily News, TMZ and various other news outlets have discovered the following about Dr. Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon who performed the tummy tuck and breast reduction on Donda West:

    • Restraining order for domestic violence
    • Investigation by state medical board
    • Malpractice lawsuits (and settlements)
    • Accusations of sexual battery
    • Multiple convictions for driving under the influence

Obviously, you don’t have the resources of TMZ. That’s okay, because you have me.

I work with plastic surgeons, dermatologists and device manufactures around the country–45 in just the past year. Most of my time was dedicated to writing about popular plastic surgery procedures (like breast reductions and tummy tucks) for the Web sites of various plastic surgeons, including for one performing Long Island plastic surgery. When I heard about Dr. Jan Adams' past, I decided to take a look at the man's site for clues. I found the following warning signs (do you see any on your surgeon's site?):

No Mention of Board Certification: Is your plastic surgeon board certified? If so, believe me, he or she will say so.

Plastic surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Board certification means your surgeon has a 4-year college degree, as well as a degree from an accredited medical school. Additionally, s/he has completed a minimum of 5 years surgical internship and residency and has fulfilled an accredited residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Finally, s/he has practiced plastic surgery for a minimum of 2 years and has passed oral and written examinations, as well as peer reviews.

Also be sure to look for membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), because the ASPS accepts only surgeons board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery as members. In addition, physicians must receive local sponsorship from other ASPS members (other board certified plastic surgeons), as well as prove they meet strict ethical standards in patient care and in the promotion of their practice. Finally, ASPS members are required to attend continuing education courses.

A review of Dr. Adams’ site shows no references to either board certification or membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That plastic surgeon I’m working with, the one who performs Long Island plastic surgery? He's board certified and he lets you know it.

No Curriculum Vitae (CV): Most plastic surgeons include a curriculum vitae (Latin for fancy resume) on their Web sites. A CV will list the schools they attended, degrees, residencies, hospital privileges, professional affiliations, articles they’ve authored, lectures they’ve given, television appearances, etc.

Again, a review of Dr. Adams’ Web site shows no CV.

Hyperbole: Remember the aforementioned “strict ethical standards in… the promotion of their practice”? Beware of the plastic surgeon that claims to be the “best.”

Dr. Adams doesn’t claim to be the best, but he does claim to have “been very active in producing some of the industries [<- note typo] top cosmetic products.” Yet, no facts are presented to back up this claim. The products he’s referring to, I assume, are: Rudalgo and Women of Color™. Okay, do your research. I did. I can’t find any of his “top cosmetic products” on Amazon. I can’t find even one of his “top cosmetic products” at skinstore.com, banler.com or skincarerx.com. Skinstore.com carries “5,000 plus skin care products,” but they don’t carry any of Dr. Adams’ “top cosmetic products.” Who does? Walgreens (“Dr. Jan Adams Complete Skin Care System for Women of Color”). As Public Enemy sang, Don’t Believe the Hype... rbole.

Other Warning Signs From Dr. Jan Adams’ Web Site

Typos/Inconsistencies. If a plastic surgeon’s attention to detail is lacking on a site designed to promote him, what might his attention to detail be like during your procedure. Examples from Dr. Adams’ site:
• “Being an innovator in the skin care field the has decided to make…”
• “… remains loyal to his commitment to plastic and reconstructive surgery and is private practice in Southern California.”
• the video section is sometimes referred to as the “TV Media Room,” and in other instances, the “Media TV Room.”
• he’s referred to as, “Dr. Jan” and “Dr Jan”

Superiority Complex? “His willingness to continually be out there amongst the people, listening to their concerns…” Amongst the people?

Never Heard of It, and Can’t Find It. He references his cosmetics company (Carlswell Products, LLC), but a Google search returns just one result – his own Web site.

That’s Funny! He uses the word “humorous” to describe some of the video clips in the TV Media TV Room. "Humorous" is a word that I don’t think I’ve ever seen on another medical site.

Accept No Imitations. His site claims to be, “the official home of the original Dr. Jan Adams.” Is there an imposter out there?

Finally, in the Procedures section, he states, “our procedures explained.” BOTOX® Cosmetic is the only procedure he explains, and what he says is revealing…

“For more detailed information about how this procedure [BOTOX® Cosmetic] may help you, we recommend that you consult a plastic surgeon who is board certified…”

I couldn’t agree more.
