Annual ASAPS Meeting

The annual meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) was held earlier this year in Florida and hosted aesthetic plastic surgeons from around the world.

Tissue glue for sealing incisions in facial aesthetic surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy to speed healing after a facelift, and tissue engineering for breast reconstruction were among the innovative topics presented at the meeting. The meeting comprised not only recent research results but also promising techniques and technology. Exhibitors of surgical instruments showcased their latest products. The teaching courses and exhibits were supplemented over the five day program with panels of experts discussing clinical topics such as facial aesthetic surgery, liposuction safety, breast implants, lasers and medically directed skin care.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's meeting is designed for surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)or its foreign equivalent. There are approximately 2,800 members and candidates in the US and Canada.

The ASAPS survey done this year shows Americans general approval of cosmetic surgery is about 57% for women and 51% for men. The same survey also showed that 82% of women wouldn't be embarrassed if people knew of their cosmetic surgery and 72% of men wouldn't be embarrassed.

9th International Symposium on Cosmetic Laser Surgery (ISCLS)

Held in Las Vegas this year, the annual symposium had over 300 in attendance. It included two days of lectures by leading experts in cosmetic laser surgery as well as a third day offering a live surgery observational where surgeons could observe their peers perform multiple procedures with various lasers.

Procedures included hair removal, vascular and pigmented lesions, Botox injections, laser-assisted blepharoplasty, tattoo removal, hair transplant, laser leg veins, erbium resurfacing and non ablative skin resurfacing. 34 exhibitors showcased the latest products and equipment related to cosmetic laser surgery.

The ISCLS is composed of over 350 international physician/scientist and assistant/nurse/technician members. All have a common interest in lasers as they relate to cosmetic surgery.

Face & Body 2000

Face & Body 2000 provided more than 4,000 industry professionals with education and information on cutting-edge products, services and techniques for the skin, makeup, massage, hair removal and wellness industries. Held in San Jose, CA over two days there were 31 general sessions, 43 supplier sponsored classrooms and 14 pre-conference and evening workshops

.

There was also an interactive exhibit hall with state-of-the art products, equipment, systems and services from a variety of companies and organizations.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Meeting

The 16th Annual Scientific Session was held earlier this year in San Francisco. Many papers were presented at the meeting, discussions including: Diagnostic mock-up, porcelain restorations, changing facial aesthetics and the art of cosmetic dentistry. Wynn Okuda, DMD gave a presentation on Creating a Masterpiece: The Art of Cosmetic Dentistry Dr Okuda said: "For much of the history of cosmetic dentistry the emphasis has been on the "scientific" aspect of bonding, material science, etc. However, as clinicians we must realize that the ultimate goal of cosmetic dentistry is to recreate nature. Therefore the role of "art" in creating clinical excellence is just as important as the "science" aspect."

The Internet and Health Information

Findings presented at Intel Corporation's Internet Health Day show that consumers increasingly seek medical information on the internet and are using the web to take a more active role in managing their health. However, physicians are not adopting the internet as quickly as their patients.

According to The Harris Poll, 70 million Americans went online between June 1998 and June 1999 looking for health information. A Cyber Dialogue survey found that 48% of online users seeking health information would like to communicate with their doctor's office via email, but only three per cent are doing so, and only 11% know their doctor's email address. Likewise, 74% of online users seeking health information said a doctor or pharmacist recommendation would make them more likely to trust a web site, but only 4% are receiving this guidance. The study further revealed that 33% of patient who want to communicate with their doctor via email would be likely to switch physicians in order to do so.
