Following years of debate, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has finally given approval to the use of saline breast implants. This historic decision signifies the first time the FDA has formally approved any brands of saline implant.

While the implants manufactured by Mentor Corp and McGhan Medical gained approval, the FDA was cautious in its ruling. FDA officials noted the relatively high complication and failure rates of breast implants, and said companies must provide women with information on these risks.

David Feigal, director of the FDA's Center for Radiological Health said studies had revealed that a substantial number of women who get implants require additional surgery at some point to remove or replace implants because of complications.

Manufacturers and cosmetic surgeons were quick to point out the products and procedures were safe. The American Society of Aesthetic Surgery said the benefits of saline implants outweighed the risks.

Everyone's happy!

Despite the controversy and negative media coverage, American women would still have saline breast implants if they had to do the operation all over again.

Saline breast implants have been blamed for a multitude of sins. The claims have ranged far and wide, from distorted breasts to disfigurement. But often these accusations have been made without any real substance.

A 10-year follow-up of 450 women discovered that around 96% of those who underwent breast augmentation were happy with the results. The study by the university of Minnesota discovered that they were so pleased with their breasts that the women wouldn't hesitate to make the same choice again. In the same study more than 90% said they were extremely satisfied with the results and around 71% said their implants felt soft and natural.

No truth to disease claims

Claims that women who receive breast implants experience a higher rate of breast cancer have proved unfounded. In two major studies, women with breast implants have shown a lower than expected rate of breast cancer. Women in whom breast cancer was detected have not been shown to have a more advanced stage of the disease or poorer prognosis than other women.

The more, the better!

Everyone from the girl next door to Hollywood's A list are having their breasts enlarged. For some it means a better job, while others it's the ticket to stardom in the next blockbuster. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimates that the number of breast augmentations rose a staggering 25% between 1997 and 1998.

For the young, & the young at heart

Breast augmentation ranks eighth in the top 10 list of the most popular cosmetic procedures in America. Last year, American surgeons performed 191,583 breast augmentations. Top of the list was chemical peels followed by wrinkle diminishing, Botox. While breast augmentation ranked eighth overall, it proved to be the third most popular procedure for women aged between 19 and 34, according to figures released by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Around 113,000women in this age group under went breast augmentation last year.
