New Hampshire plastic surgeon Lawrence N Gray MD explains a breast reduction technique using liposuction.

Liposuction Breast Reduction is an alternative to the traditional method of breast reduction. It relieves the backache, shoulder pain, neck pain and headaches caused by oversized breasts - without the scarring. This method leaves two 1/4 inch scars instead of the extensive scarring left on each breast by the traditional method. The lack of scarring is an important consideration for some patients.

This method of breast reduction is suitable for all patients and ages. I have performed over 450 liposuction breast reductions on patients ranged from ages 14-74. I have used this method exclusively with 100% success in relief of symptoms for the past five years. Liposuction Breast Reduction may be covered by insurance.

Liposuction Breast Reduction appeals to younger patients because it does not interfere with breast-feeding and allows for a quick return to normal activity. For patients 40 years and over, it is also appealing because it does not interfere with mammograms as conventional surgery sometimes may.

Relief of the painful symptoms often associated with oversized breasts may be obtained by fat removal. Over 70% of the breast is fat. Skin shrinks after removal of fat, regardless of the patient's age or breast size. Skin tightens in response to removal of the weight it would have previously supported. The removal of fat has the added benefit of drawing the nipple upward, sometimes as much as three inches, without having to have a breast lift.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Two small incisions are made on each breast. The patient's breasts are infiltrated with fluid, which pushes the tissue apart so the fat surrounding the mammary glands can be suctioned more easily. This method minimizes bleeding and pain. A thorough suctioning of the fat is then performed.

There are minimal complications with this method. There is virtually no bleeding and no specialized post-operative care. There has been no nipple numbness and no skin loss among my patients.

Liposuction Breast Reduction allows for quicker recovery than the traditional method. There is minimal aftercare, so most patients return to work in 2-3 days and are back to full activity in as little as a week.
