Is It Time for New Breast Implants?

Although breast implants aren't considered "permanent," they don't come with expiration dates to tell you when to replace them. However, there are numerous factors that affect the longevity of breast implants and ways you can tell if it might be time for new ones.
- Type of implant – Silicone implants may well last longer than saline implants. Deflation of a saline implant is something you will notice right away. A ruptured silicone implant – if diagnosed by mammogram, sonogram, or MRI – should be replaced.
- Placement of the implant – I typically use a submuscular placement (actually under the pectoral muscle) for breast implants at my Long Island practice. Breast implants placed above the muscle may be prone to more problems, and revision surgery to place the implant beneath the muscle may become necessary.
- Capsular contracture (hardening), a change in position/shape/feel of the implant, or breast pain are all reasons to consult with your plastic surgeon. Additional tests might be ordered to determine if your implants need to be replaced.
In the absence of any symptoms, I tell my patients to follow the guidelines for implant care, keep an eye out for any signs of rupture, and enjoy the results of their breast augmentation.
