Strange Cosmetic Surgery Searches

I'm a cosmetic surgery writer. I write about all things beauty, all day long. But I don't just pull topics out of thin air. No, our clients use the Web to be smart with their advertising dollars, reaching patients who type in certain phrases in the popular search engines. For instance, if a person types in a phrase like "breast augmentation chicago”, they'll often find one of our clients in the first page or two of Google or Yahoo.

This is all pretty uninteresting to the average person, I bet. But here's something that you might find intriguing: People are weird when it comes to what they type into search engines. We track this kind of stuff, and here are a few strange searches I've come across recently:

  • "cosmetic gone picture surgery wrong" (It’s probably not going to go right when your thoughts are all chopped up like that)
  • "cosmetic surgery prices castro bypass" (Apparently someone is concerned about the leader of Cuba staying slim and looking his best)
  • "long island breast augmentation chicago" (Last time I checked, Chicago isn’t in New York)
  • "good cheap cosmetic surgery in chicago" (Just what everyone wants: good n’ cheap)
  • "cosmetic surgery for ugly feet in illinois" (Here’s a better solution: wear socks)

Who comes up with these things? While the majority of people are using pretty straightforward searches like "breast augmentation chicago” or "los angeles nose surgery," it seems like there are a lot of people out there that don't quite get the Web search concept. I wonder if Google or Yahoo needs to give Web surfers more information - maybe something like a Using the Web Tutorial - even at this late stage of the game? I heard that Bill Gates says in the next 10 years we’ll see a marked decrease in the number of people searching the Web using keyboards. Instead, you’ll have touchscreen or voice recognition technology.

I can only wonder what kind of results we’ll get once that new technology becomes widespread. But back to cosmetic surgery for a second, back to those searchers across the country in places like Phoenix and Chicago. Breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck are all incredibly popular search terms online, and I don’t expect that to change no matter what changes are in store for Web technology.
