A Medical Vacation that Makes Sense

If you follow cosmetic surgery in the media, you’ve no doubt noticed that in one of the latest trends, patients are flying around the world for their procedures.  In fact a whole industry seems to have sprung up around this idea, the cosmetic surgery travel industry.  Don’t believe me?  Just Google “medical vacation” and you’ll see what I mean.

Call me unadventurous, but to me, those two words don’t really go together.  At least not in a good way.  When I’m on vacation, I don’t want the word “medical” anywhere near my itinerary.  And when I’m not feeling my best, whether I’m recovering from some kind of procedure or just battling the flu, there’s only one place I want to be: home.

Having said all that, though, I will admit it makes perfect sense to me that people from California’s Central Valley would travel here to the Central Coast to see a facial cosmetic surgeon I work with, Dr. Paul Stallman.  In fact, Dr. Stallman tells me a good percentage of his patients come from Fresno for cosmetic surgery with him.

After all, going to Pismo Beach , where Dr. Stallman practices, isn’t like jetting off to or .  It’s an easy two-hour trip from Fresno.  Cosmetic surgery patients can drive over early in the morning and be home later that same day if they choose.  But more often, people come and combine a little rejuvenation business with pleasure.  You see, people who live in the Central Valley travel over to the coast often for quick getaways all the time.  Whether to escape the heat in the summer, go wine tasting or just hang out at the beach, Valley residents make up many of the eight million tourists we see in San Luis Obispo County each year.

Dr. Stallman says his Fresno cosmetic surgery patients enjoy combining a long weekend with rejuvenation treatment.  Some plan a couple of days of relaxation on the Central Coast with a friend or family member, have a facelift or eyelid surgery early in the week, then head back home.  Some come for an injectable treatment like BOTOX® Cosmetic and don’t have to worry about downtime at all.

Don’t expect to see me on a plane to Bangkok for liposuction any time soon.  But spending a few days in Pismo Beach and returning home looking better than well-rested?  That’s an adventure I could get behind.
