Virtually Pain Free

We've seen science fiction come to life in the computer age, and now science fiction is helping science. Virtual reality is being used in hospitals in the USA for pain relief. A recent study found virtual reality can reduce the pain of daily wound care for burn victims by 50 percent.

While having their wounds cleaned, patients wear virtual reality masks in a computerized world where they can have a snow ball fight or fly through a river canyon.

It works by literally taking the patient's mind off the pain. While playing in the virtual reality world, the patient has less consciousness to focus on and feel the pain. Researchers hope to use virtual reality for other types of pain such as acute surgical pain and chronic pain.

Marilyn

Did you know that Marilyn Monroe had rhinoplasty? As well as this, in 1949, she had a chin augmentation by plastic surgeon John Pangman, who performed a chin graft.

Coffee Lipstick

Flavored lip gloss has been replaced by an adult version - coffee flavored and enhanced lipstick. Caffeine lipstick was dreamed up by the innovative Los Angeles makeup company Hard Candy. It not only , smells and tastes like coffee, but also provides an instant caffeine fix. Like nicotine patches, this lipstick works by being absorbed through the skin. Other coffee lovers can take their choice of lipsticks, including chocolate, vanilla or caramel.

Salmon keeps you laughing

Looking for a heart-healthy meal to lift your spirits? Go to the store and stock up on some salmon or mackerel. Oily fish contain Omega 3 fatty oils which are well known to help prevent heart and circulatory problems. Researchers at Wollongong University, in Australia say the same fish oils may be useful in preventing or possibly treating depression.

Research centered on nations with a high consumption of oily fish, including Japan and Taiwan, showed the incidence of mental depression in these countries was much less prevalent than Australia.

Further study is still needed to fully understand the potential link between oily fish and lower rates of depression.
